[29]
She lived in Chicago, IL, and Milwaukee, WI, and Waynetown, IN, and Homewood, Crete, and Park Forest, IL. She lived next door to her daughter in the San Fernando, CA. Floyd took the family to Drumright, OK, worked in the oil fields, stayed at least 3 or 4 years. She must have been 2.5 to 3 years old. The debate between Arthur and Harter centered on my inability to remember anything at that age. They thought I couldn't possibly remember walking barefoot with Mother a half mile up the road to milk a cow but lightning struck a metal sign and the cow took off. Do you think I could possibly make that up? Also a small terrier that jumped from a high kitchen window, also Harter wanting to pack a goat in his suitcase when we ready to move to IN. So we were in OK in 1913 because I was born Jan 1914 and Dad worked at the state house of Guthrie, later vital papers were stolen and taken to OK City which made OK City the capital of OK. That is the story Dad told. We returned to IN and got our first car so checking what I've just written I would say Mother and Dad probably went to Guthrie on their way to Drumright. A couple of years before 1911 or 12.

As told to Robin by Mom - May 12, 2002 - Mother's Day
Sometime while I was in 6th and 8th grades (1925-ish) I lived at 4231 Cottage Grove Ave in Chicago with Mother and the both of the boys. Then Mother and I moved to 43rd and Drexel Blvd without the boys in an apartment complex. The boys were both working at Litton's, maybe Harter went to live with Dad. Mother made all of my trousseau there. She had a canary, the only time she had a bird. Your father and I went together for a year. Then he was such a romantic, he thought that since we couldn't afford to get married that we should elope. That way we would stay together. And it worked. That was 1933. So Mike Cahill and Judy Sahlin went with us to elope as our witnesses. The place was south of Chicago at a Justice of the Peace…maybe Willow-something. The Justice of the Peace lectured us before marrying us. He said, none of his couples had ever separated. So we weren't to be the first. It was probably a Saturday night, after the ceremony we went to an outdoor recreation dance hall where Corey Lynn was playing. We danced. I don't remember what we told our parents but we stayed in a hotel that night somewhere between Steger and Crete on the east side. Then went home the next day. Did whatever we did on a Sunday and went home.
During the year after the elopement, we started buying furniture on layaway. Then the family, Uncle Ed in particular, starting planning our wedding. What they would do, how they would make us suffer. That was the beginning of the white hands and the spider web business. Uncle Ed started mailing warnings to Daddy. One was a rolled up, hand drawn spider web which had a note "Beware, it's closing in on you." Then Aunt Grace and Grandma Flesher were planning a shower for me. So how could we up and tell them we were already married. We just couldn't do that to them. It would be cruel. So we went to the Methodist minister (the church where Daddy played basketball) and since there were no complications (such as me being pregnant), the minister thought this was the best way to handle it. He would repeat the whole ceremony and vows and add the "confirmation" part at the end.
In July 1934 in the Flesher living room, 7515 Eggleston, several friends and family were at our wedding. I was able to come down the stairs to make my appearance. Arthur gave me away. At the very end of the ceremony when the groom kisses the bride, the minister announced this to be a confirmation of a marriage that took place July 1933. Daddy wouldn't stop kissing me because he was afraid of what his in-laws would say. Mother said later that she had dreaded losing me but she had already lost me and didn't know it and I was no different so she took it very well. And this plan proved to be a good one. The family was not disappointed or upset.
