He moved in the autumn of 1810 to Fayette Co, OH, where he became the first blacksmith in Washington Court House, county seat of the newly formed Fayette Co. He served as Ensign in Capt. Nicholas CUNNINGHAM's company in the Ohio State Militia in the War of 1812. In Nov 1830, he started on the tedious journey by ox team for McLean Co, IL with his large family, the youngest of whom was only 12 days of age. 22 days were required for the journey. Their new home was established near present day Lexington, where he followed his trade. He is given credit by some historians for making the first plows capable of turning the tough prairie sod, and emigrants came to Lexington in large numbers to secure these implements.
The 1830 census shows 1011001-121101 for the members of his family.
As Henry FLECHER in abt 1812 he opened a blacksmith shop on the S corner of Ct and Fayette Sts where Hudson's jewelry now stands, which, if not the first, was among the very earliest blacksmith shops in WCH. He carried on the business at this point for 15 or 20 years.
