Some Reminiscences of George Flesher.
His Early Life in this Township Was Spent with Several Famous Warriors.
Editor, Unit Journal: I would like to add a word to what has already been said in your paper in memory of the late Mr. George Flesher.
Mr. Flesher was one of the pioneers of our county, and by his death one of the last links connecting the early history of Lexington with this present time is broken. When he came here the Indians had been gone but a short time from the Mackinaw forts, which were erected during the Black Hawk War by HENLINE and BARTHOLOMEW, and were still standing.
At his coming there were but four houses in Lexington. Mr. LAMAR lives where Mr. W. H. CLAGGETT now lives. Mr. TILBURY lived where Mrs. L. S. VAN DOLAH now lives; Mr. Jacob SPAWR was living on the corner just north of where the Presbyterian Church now stands and Henry APPLE occupied a house on Main St about where the Thos Stable Harness Shop is now located. Mr. APPLE was Lexington's first storekeeper. He brought his entire stock of goods with him in a large sugar barrel. Mr. APPLE manifests a strong propensity to deal largely in "wet" goods, and because of this he was run out of the town.
Mr. FLESHER was a close personal friend of Major General Joseph BARTHOLOMEW, a soldier of the American Revolution and the War of 1812 and a noted Indian fighter during the Indian Wars on the frontiers of KY, OH and IN. At the death of the General in 1840, Mr. FLESHER prepared the grave to receive the body of his friend, according to instructions previously given him by the General. Shortly after this he performed the same sad office for another friend, Captain James BIGGAR, a comrade in arms of BARTHOLOMEW. These two were noted men in their day, being celebrated for their skill and bravery in the Indian Wars as well as for their soldierly qualities in the wars against the British and Mr. FLESHER was very proud of their friendship.
In 1844 was the year of floods and raging streams all over this western county. In June of that year Mr. Albert DODD, a young lawyer of Bloomington, was drowned while trying to ford the Mackinaw just north of where the iron bridge stands south of town. Merritt COVE, who was one of this company with Mr. DODD, hastened to Lexington for aid. Mr. FLESHER was the first to respond and was the first to reach the scene of the tragedy. A raft was hastily constructed and launched and the rescuing party was soon at the spot where the unfortunate man was swept from his horse. The search was kept up during the afternoon. …next morning success rewarded their efforts and the body was found about 20 rods below the ford.
Because of his character and ability, Mr. DODD was very popular and widely known and the sudden and sad tragedy of his death made a great impression all over the county. Mr. FLESHER was possibly the last survivor of that searching party of 64 years ago.
Mr. FLESHER was one of the tall men of our community standing six feet four inches in height and was strong and muscular, very skillful with the axe and carpenter tools of all kinds. When he came here this country was a wilderness. At his death it was one of the garden spots of our state, and it was his privilege to have a part in this wonderful transformation.
Mr. FLESHER was a very good type of those tall, sinewy, courageous and stouthearted pioneers, that more than one hundred years ago stood as a wall of fire between the red warriors of the wilderness and the peaceful settlements on the eastern slope of the Alleghenies.
