Followup to the present day Dorlant heritage in Holland:
The dike Broekdijk still exists in Holland, and is a dead end road almost deserted behind the Nijenrode Manor. The Castle Ruwiel lays at the River Angstel or Aa. There still remains a little island with an old chicken house with broken windows, mocking the lost glory of the Ruwiel manor. There still is an old farm with a stone marker from the year 1591. The splendid castle of Nijenrode is no longer a castle, but a school, Nijenrode University, one of the premier business schools in Europe. But what has become of the family of Van Nijenrode? The name Dor-lant has remained in the Gooi District and Loosdrecht. They have the right of the blazon of Ruweil, including van Nijenrode and Persijin, because they directly descend from the Lords of Nijenrode (Utecht, May 1959, Messages of the History Association of Utecht).
in the area called Region of Rivers, possibly in a Holland province of The Netherlands. Is this area between the rivers Vecht and The Gooi? There are reports of records of his ancestors there between 1370 and 1451.
The records of the Dutch Reformed Ch (DRC) of Brooklyn show that he and his wife Anna were members and communicants as early as 1677 and that he was an elder in 1711. His exact burial place is unknown, not surprising since the early Dutch settlers did not use tombstones and that interments were made in family and private grounds. They were marked simply with fieldstones, fine for the time but not enough to withstand generations of wear.
For example, the oldest stone in the churchyard is dated 1730. It is supposed that his grave is somewhere either in the old Dutch churchyard in Brooklyn or on his old "bowery" homestead at Bedford.
No passenger lists of Dutch vessels arriving at the port of New Amsterdam exist for that year. However, this information is verified by other facts: In the list of those men who took the oath of allegiance to the English crown in 1687 is "Jan Gerrise Dorland - 35 Jeare". The date representing the number of years resident in New Netherlands, thus 1687 - 35 = 1652.
spelled Bruklyn or Breuckelen. He settled first near what is now the Fulton Street ferry, and later in the village of Bedford in Brooklyn Twp. His farm, or "bowery," comprising 40 acres, was at the eastern end of Bedford where the present Fulton Street is located.
When in 1687 the Court of Sessions ordered the town to choose a new commissioner in place of Tunis GUYSBERT, they elected Jan Gerritsen DORLAND. He continued to serve as commissioner until at least 1701. These commis-sioners were among the most important and prominent men in the community. The performance of their duties required integrity of character, a knowledge of affairs, sound judgment, and executive ability. In 1699 the commis-sioners were designated "townmen," in recognition of their extensive powers and general utility. Instead of confin-ing their attention merely to running property lines, dividing common lands, and laying out lots, streets, and roads, they became the local lawmakers and guardians of the law, levied and collected the taxes, disbursed town revenues, and exercised a general supervision of the town.
About 1698 a census was taken to compile a list of all the freeholders, their wives, children, apprentices, and slaves within the Kings Co on Nassauw Island. Under the town of Brookland is this entry: "Jan Gerritz DOR-LANT... Men 1; Wo. 1; Ch. 3; App.1."
they probably attended school no 3 in the heart of the village of Bedford, at the crossroads. It stood on the site of the 1939 Public School #3.
a meadow lot no 18.
1 Poll £18; 2 horses £24; 1 horse 2 yrs £5; 1 horse 1 yr £5; 5 cows £25; 2 cows 2 yrs £5; 2 cows 1 yr £3; 20 morg. land £40; total £123.
From "The Holland Project": In 1636-7 he had to pay out a part of a heritage from the late Wouter Gerrits Dorlant, in the amount of 360 guilders, because "their mother, Annetje Dirks, wishes it" (Protocolls of Kortenhoef). He is mentioned as paying taxes of locks (sluises) in 1639 (Book L.135 Oude Kortenhoefse Geslachten), and again from 1641-1642 (Description of numbers of Peat Diggers in Cortenhoeff). This would be when he was between 7 and 17 years old. Is this correct?
