I have the following notes on Charity Farrington (wife of Benjamin Haviland):
1. Abstracts of Wills Vol II 1708-1728 New York State
BENJAMIN HAVILAND
William Burnet, Esq., Captain-General and Governor. Whereas, BENJAMIN
HAVILAND, late of Rye, in the County of Westchester, died intestate, Letters
of Administration are granted to his wife, Charity Haviland, May 16, 1724.
2. Family Tree Maker CD192, Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy, 1750-1930,

Benjamin, s Benj. & Mercy, Jerusalum; m 2 Mo (Apr) 10, 1729 Charity
FARRINGTON, wd Benjamin HAVILAND
Ch: Mary m Anthony Tripp
Isaac m Mary Burns
I believe I pulled the BIRDSALL notes off the internet, but when compared to
the FROST notes below clarifies the two Benjamins.
4. From the FROST genealogy (approximently pages 70-71) I have:
26 BENJAMIN HAVILAND, son of Benjamin (4) and Abigail (Mott) Haviland, b.
prior to 1698; m. Charity Farrington (?) of Flushing, May 16, 1724. Letters
of adm. were granted to Charity on his estate. Charity m. 2nd, 2 of 10 mo.,
1729, Benjamin, b. 15 of 1 mo., 1691; died 27 of 11 mo., 1754, son of
Benjamin and Mercy (Forman) Birdsall; she d. prior to Dec. 26, 1734/5, for at
that time Benjamin Birdsall married Elizabeth Hopkins, daughter of Ichabod
and Sarah (Coles) Hopkins, and on Sept. 15, 1744, Benjamin marries Rachel
Carpenter. He was of Rye and owned property in Oblong. Shortly after the
marriage of Charity the second time, her children have guardians appointed by
the Court.
Issue:
+71 Benjamin. On March 15, 1730, he was an infant under
21 years. Thomas Haviland of Westchester, a blacksmith, is made his
guardian.
+72 Charity. May 23, 1733, Ebenezer Haviland is appointed her guardian.
+73 Isaac. May 23, 1733, Ebenezer Haviland is appointed his guardian.
+74 Solomon. May 23, 1733, Ebenezer Haviland is appointed his guardian.
Benjamin owned land adjoining his father's and brothers' as will be noted
under his father's real estate records.
5. I have John Farrington (1624-1677) and Mary Bullard (1620-1655) as Father
and Mother to Charity Farrington. Unfortunately I have no footnotes as to
this data's origin. I have no information on Elizabeth Bates' parents.

RESEARCH NOTES for the Subject INDIVIDUAL above

[133]
In a letter from Grant A. Dorland of Ocala FL, to "Catherine", dated June 10 1965, he wrote (based on the information he received from the Daams research): "The Van Nijenrodes, from whom we descend, were a fighting tribe of Dutch medieval noblemen who occupied Castle Nijenrode in Breuklen on the Vecht River, This castle still stands but has of course been destroyed and rebuilt several times in the past 667 years.... As you can see the name "Dorlant" (which means dry or reclaimed land) first appeared in the 4th generation of this family. Our man (meaning Gijsbert) lost out when the oldest son - or the strongest - inherited the estate, and departed from the castle to take our name." According to short version of the story in "The Holland Project:" Gijsbert Van Nijenrode, known as DORLANT, son of Gijsbert Van Nijenrode, was granted on St Elizabeth's Day in 1391, with halfa farm in Langerac (16 acres) and with a "good" in Niemandsvriend near Sliedrecht. Around Easter 1419, in the service of Jan Van Egmond, Councelor (sic) of Duke Jan Van Beijeren, he robbed some civilians from Utrecht, on the River Lek, and captured them. On 21 January
1451, he is listed as the uncle of Nicolaas Phillips, Nicolaas Van Tornot. On 21 February 1450/51, in a trial between Gijsbert, alias Dorlant, plaintiff, versus Jan Van Nijenrode (his brother) and Splinter Van Zijl(l) (his nephew), regarding goods in the Alblasserwaard in the
parish of Slijdrecht, taken by Gijsbert Dorlant from the manor of Nijenrode. It is sworn that they do not have possession of these goods. Gijsbert grants a fief in Niemandrrient near Slisdrect to his nephew, Splinter Van Zijll, son of Jan Van Nijenrode, in 1455. Court battles ensued. Gijsbert, who apparently sold these fiefs, given to him by his father in feudal tenancy, without consent of the feudal Lord, was comdemned "not to have any right to these lands eternally" because he clearly knew this and furthermore did not make justification within three days. The lands had been sold to Floris Jansz, sheriff of Slijdrecht, 10 acres lying in Niemandsvriend, in the parish of Slijdrecht. He received possession for the dike reevs and "polder-board" of the Alblasserwaard-polder, 24 February 1450/51. (Verdict in the Hague by Lord Van Landy, sentence of around 200 Wilhelminian shields (guilders). Gijsbert was married and had issue: 1. Willem Gijsbert Dorlant 2. Jan Gijsbert Dorlant 3. Dirk Gijsbert Dorlant 4. Geertruijt; (in) 1474 a house was invested in Clapstraat to her, with the commitment that the fief will come to her brother Dirk Gijsbert DORLANT if she will die without children. Lubbert Cornelius Dorlant sold this fief 250 years later, 7 February 1723. A longer, more detailed version of the various court cases is found in the material I have on the Holland Project. It will be included in possible future longer works on this family.
